If you have called my office at any point in the last few years, you had the benefit of four people whether you knew it or not. That arrangement is now formal. Lindsay Bruce is my partner on the team. Rick Pirog and my mother, Carroll Tyler, are referring and consulting brokers.
The office has not moved, the phone number has not changed, and you will still be talking to me. What is new is that the structure behind all of it is written down. I think that is worth a few minutes of your time, because how a team is built decides who is actually looking after you on the day something gets complicated.
How I Got Here
I came into this business sideways. I grew up in Vail and left after Vail Mountain School for college in upstate New York, then for a first career that ran from teaching English in Osaka to international business in San Francisco to an industrial repair consulting business I started in Colorado in 1995. In June of 2004, with two small children and an irresistible pull toward home, I returned to the valley to begin my real estate career.
I arrived without a book of business. I began my introduction into the business as Rick Pirog's assistant, and I earned my broker's license that November. Rick had been selling here since 1977. My mother had been selling here since 1981. Between the two of them, the next few years amounted to a PhD in how real estate actually transacts in the Vail Eagle Valley.
Twenty-two years later, the arrangement runs the other direction. Rick and Carroll now refer their clients to me, which is a huge compliment and a responsibility, and exactly why I want to be precise about what it means.
Lindsay Bruce, Partner
Lindsay grew up in Winter Park inside this business. Her mother built a brokerage and served as Chair-Elect of the Colorado Association of REALTORS, and her father ran a property management company, so contracts and negotiations and difficult phone calls were dinner-table conversation long before she had a license of her own.
She spent more than a decade in Colorado luxury hospitality first: pre-opening leadership teams at two hotels, corporate retreats for national brands, weddings where several hundred actions had to happen in the right order on the right day. When that industry slowed in 2020, she joined Slifer Smith & Frampton, and she won the Office Administrator of the Year award in 2021. She obtained her real estate license that year as well.
What that background means in practice is that Lindsay keeps our transactions on track and closing successfully. Timelines, marketing, lender deadlines, the fifty small items between a signed contract and a closing table all benefit from her attention to detail and her expertise. Transactions run smoothly and problems get solved. You can read Lindsay's full bio on her own page.
Rick Pirog, Referring and Consulting Broker
Rick has been a broker in this valley since 1977, which is longer than almost anyone still working here. He came to real estate from physics, of all places, with a degree from Colorado State and a master's in business administration. He started out in land development and commercial sales in Colorado Springs before deciding he would rather live in the mountains.
Rick has sold more than $1.5 billion in Vail Valley real estate and has been among the top producers at Slifer Smith & Frampton for four decades. He served as president of the Vail Board of Realtors and president of the Cordillera Valley Club Metro District. His clients have bought and sold across the entire residential range here, from new developments and slopeside condominiums to one-off custom homes in many communities in the Vail Eagle Valley.
Rick has now moved to a referring and consulting role and works hand in hand with Lindsay and me to make sure his friends and clients are well taken care of. He still has a read on this market, and a wisdom, that no data set can give you. When something unusual turns up on a property, and around here it does, Rick has generally seen a version of it before and can tell you what it means. More on Rick's career.
Carroll Tyler, Referring and Consulting Broker
My mother moved to Vail in 1979 with two kids. She had grown up in West Virginia, graduated from Smith College, spent her early years teaching school in Chicago, and then raised a family in Rochester, New York until 1979. Once she relocated to Vail she learned the luxury hotel business, and in 1981 she joined Slifer Smith & Frampton and never looked back. More than forty years of developing, listing and selling luxury real estate in this valley followed.
Carroll was instrumental in the renaissance of Vail Village, and she played a major role in developments including Spraddle Creek Estates, the Four Seasons Resort, the Gold Peak Penthouses and the Lodge Chalets. She will tell you that “timing and luck are wonderful life partners, including the many people who helped along the way.” And I will tell you she is the best people person and the best mentor I could have asked for.
The clients she refers to Lindsay and me are people she has known since before I moved home, and all of them have become dear friends. We are honored to help every one of them in any way we can, and to help carry on her legacy. Her page has the whole story.

What a Referral Means on This Team
This is the part I want to be exact about, because “referral” can mean close to nothing in our industry. In a lot of places, it means your name gets passed along and the person who actually knew you disappears from the file.
That is not how we do it. Rick and Carroll stay on as consulting brokers on the business they refer. They are reachable, and they weigh in. If you bought a house with Carroll in 2011 and you are thinking about selling it now, she is still part of that conversation. Lindsay and I become intimately involved and we do the work, and Carroll is still your trusted advisor, the one who knows why you bought the property in the first place. Rick and Carroll still care very much about each of their clients and their families.
Nobody gets handed off here. They get introduced.
What It Means If You Are Buying or Selling
In practice you get one point of contact and four highly experienced brokers sitting behind it. I am your lead broker. Lindsay is my partner broker and manages the process alongside me. Rick and Carroll are consultants on the business they bring to our team effort.
Add the years up and it comes to more than a century of real estate transaction expertise between East Vail and Gypsum. That figure matters less as a statistic than as a practical fact: there is very little that can happen in an Eagle County transaction that one of the four of us has not already seen and solved. And as this industry keeps demanding more technical, legal and transactional knowledge, Lindsay and I stay at the front of it, because that is what the work now requires.

Everything Else Stays the Same
Same office at 531 East Lionshead Circle. Same number. And the same commitment to the bilingual side of this practice, which we built because the Spanish-speaking market in this valley has been underserved for a long time and I intend to keep serving it. This post, like every page on the site, is also published in Spanish.
If you are still getting to know the Vail Eagle Valley, start with the neighborhood guides. If you want the numbers rather than the noise, the market update is where I keep them honest. If you are weighing a sale, the seller's guide walks through how we price, prepare, and market a home and what it actually costs to sell. You can also read more about the team.
And if you would rather just talk, please call me. You can reach me at Slifer Smith & Frampton's Vail and Lionshead office at (970) 904-0355, or at jtyler@slifer.net.
